Telford Tigers are pleased to announce the return of forward James Callagher for the upcoming season. James or ‘Bricks’ as he’s known as, will return to playing as part of the club’s Laidler side and will wear the number 23 shirt.
The 29-year-old has played hockey in Shropshire since his junior days, icing for sides such as Telford Rockets and Telford Trojans. Callagher made his senior Tigers debut in 2014 when he iced for the NIHL 2 roster.
Callagher has continued to play his hockey out of Telford ever since and will be returning this year for his seventh eighth season with Telford Tigers. Callagher has always been a reliable player within the team having travelled up and down the country with short-benches, stepping up to the mark when required.
We caught up with Callagher ahead of his return;
This is your 8th season with Telford Tigers, how does it feel to be back for the 2023/24 season?
“Looking back on the past 7 seasons, I’ve had some great times especially winning the league the other season and the playoffs and cup last year.”
What are your thoughts on the team’s performance the past two seasons and how do you feel heading into this season?
“The past two seasons have probably been the best and strongest team we’ve had which has definitely helped winning some silverware.”
Do you have any specific routines that help you stay focused and mentally prepared before games?
“I don’t have any specific routines other than to get some good rest before the games.”
Are there any specific opponents or games you’re looking forward to this season?
“I don’t have any specific games I’m looking forward to. I just take each game as it comes and I’m looking forward to playing again.”
Do you have any goals or aspirations for yourself and the team in this upcoming season?
“Hopefully I can put up a few more points this season then I have done in previous years and hopefully we can win some more silverware.”
And finally, do you have a message for our fans ahead of the new season?
“Thank you for your support, it really helps us to go that extra mile. We’re looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you again this season.”
Tigers 2 Coach Dougie Wildman is pleased to have secured James again this season commenting:
“We’re really pleased to sign Bricks again for another year. He’s another valued long-time member of the team. We love Bricks because he’s like Ron-seal paint (other brands are available) because he does exactly what it says on the tin… We just know he will give 110% every shift he’s out there and his crash and bash style causes opposition to struggle with him which in turn opens opportunities. We’re looking forward to seeing more of his high energy shifts again this year.”

In the 2023/24 season, Tigers are again offering individual player sponsorship at £500. The package will include a personalised ‘SPECIAL’ exclusive third jersey with a company name or family name patch, announcements on match nights, a small advert or logo in the match night programmes and a signed player photo. The jersey will be worn for cup games and play-off games and will not be available as a replica.
