At Telford Tigers our mission is to support schools and their communities through our cash back for schools scheme.
By leveraging the excitement and camaraderie of ice hockey, we aim to provide financial support to schools, empowering them to enhance their educational programs, facilities, and resources.
Through our innovative cash back program, we forge strong partnerships with local schools who share an interest in promoting sports for young people. In the 2022/23 season Tigers expanded the programme offers to local primary, secondary and tertiary education establishments.
As part of the initiative, Tigers make a maximum of 200 tickets available to each school for just £2 per ticket, giving the family access to a great night’s evening entertainment to watch the world’s fastest team sport at an affordable price. Once all the ticket income has been received, Telford Tigers donate 50% of the proceeds (£1 for every ticket sold) back to the school.
Our dedicated team collaborates closely with schools, actively engaging in dialogue in order to successfully promote the scheme. Additionally, Telford Tigers supply an explanation letter to parents and digital artwork to assist in publicising the fixture.
Over the course of the 2022/23 season, Hexagon Telford Tigers welcomed 14 different schools into Telford Ice Rink on a match night to watch the Tigers NIHL National League team as part of the programme.
Collectively between the 14 schools, there was a total of 1974 tickets purchased, averaging 141 school attendees for each visit. As the programme shares the proceeds equally with the schools, it meant that Telford Tigers donated a total of £1974 back to the schools during the season.
Following the completion of the 2022/23 season, our school’s liaison team conducted a feedback survey with the participating schools. A total of 10 of the 14 schools who attended took the time to provide their feedback on the scheme.
Some key findings from the survey were:
- 100% of respondents would like to engage with the schools’ programme again next year.
- 100% of respondents rated their overall experience of the programme 5 out of 5.
- 80% of respondents reported receiving positive feedback from parent with no school receiving any negative feedback.

In the coming season we will be looking to build upon the recent success of the programme by adding a wider schools’ package including player visits and school visits to the rink to meet the coach have a dressing room tour etc.
Tom Watkins Hexagon Telford Tigers General Manager commented “We started the programme again in January 2023 following a successful launch the previous season. Getting 14 schools and nearly 2000 additional spectators through the doors in half a season was a fantastic achievement. We have set a goal of 20 plus different schools next season and I believe the Tigers can give back over £3000 to the schools next season.”
Just a few of the comments received from the parents following the school visits:
“My son loved it so much he has taken up ice skating lessons with a view to join Telford Tigers youth team when he’s five. It’s a great family day out, all enjoyed it from the youngest to the eldest. We can’t wait until we can go again!”
(Captain Webb Primary)
“Parents said their children really enjoyed attending the game and had then continued to go for the rest of the season”
(Meadows Primary)
After reviewing the survey comments Tom went on to say, “It is great that the initiative is not only giving back to the community, but we are seeing positive traction in attracting new spectators and especially players for the future”.
