James Smith Tranfers to National Tigers

Today the club can confirm that James Smith will be transferring from the club’s Laidler North 2 team, to the National Telford Tigers roster with immediate effect.

Smith first represented Telford Tigers during the 2013/14 season where he first appeared on the EPL roster. The 29-year-old has produced some outstanding hockey for Telford over the years, including an all time NIHL 2 record for the most assists (53) and goals (56) scored during the 2014/15 season.

Since then, Smith has been part of winning rosters for Telford. A selection of his accolades for Telford include being 2024/15 EPHIL Champion, 2024/14 EPHIL Cup Champion, 2019/20 NIHL Champion, 2019/20 NIHL Cup Champions and 2022/23 North 2 Playoff Champion.

Smith who was started the season for his ninth year with Telford Tigers, will go on to play for the remainder of the 2023/24 season wearing the number #49 jersey.

Telford Tigers 2 Coach Scott McKenzie commented on James’ transfer saying:

“Smithy is a quality player. Especially at NIHL 2 level. We were lucky to have him for as long as we have. This season, he came back to us after having knee surgery and also in great shape.

Injuries and opportunity means that he moves up to the National League Tigers with our blessing. The fact that he remains a Tiger is hugely important to us and we support the decision for him to move up and play at the highest level available to him.

As much as Smithy is a huge loss to the Tigers 2 team, I believe that this merely opens an opportunity for someone else to take. I’m excited to see who takes it.”

Telford Tigers Head Coach Tom Watkins is delighted to have James join the Telford Tigers 1 roster commenting:

“James Smith’s dedication and skill on the ice have been a driving force for Telford Tigers 2, and we are thrilled to welcome him to into the National Tigers roster for the remainder of the season. With Sam unexpectedly out for the season we had a roster spot for a forward, James is no stranger to National league hockey and his skillset and passion for the game will undoubtedly elevate our team, adding depth and strength to our lineup.”

James’ own and loan shirts are available to order now for £150. Please see the Tigers’ Online Shop for details.
