Match Preview: Telford Tigers 2 vs Bradford Bulldogs Semi-Final

Semi-Final Match Preview

Match Preview: Telford Tigers 2 vs Bradford Bulldogs Semi-Final. This weekend, Telford Tigers 2 will be facing their debut Cup fixtures in the NIHL Laidler Cup. The Cup competition is new to the 2021/22 season and included all teams in the Laidler NIHL2 North league.

Telford Tigers 2 were categorised into the Midlands group of the Cup alongside local rivals Coventry Blaze NIHL, Nottingham Lions and also NIHL North 2 returnees, Sutton Sting. Grouped in the North was Hull Jets, Bradford Bulldogs, Sheffield Titans and Altrincham Aces.

Telford Tigers 2 have had an exemplar form from the start of the season, having only dropped two points all season when they faced Sutton Sting on home ice back in October.

The Shropshire side currently sit at the top of the NIHL Laidler league table and also completed the early stages of the Cup competition as group winners after a nail-biting 4-3 win over Coventry Blaze NIHL at the Skydome Arena last month.

The Bulldogs have had a reasonable start to the season having won over 70% of the games they’ve played so far with some big wins over Hull Jets and Altrincham Aces. The final standings of the North group saw the Bulldogs finish second where they slimly missed out on the top spot by only two points.

The Yorkshire side have always been keen to take home silverware. During the 2018/19 season, Bulldogs secured a place at the North 2 Laidler Play-Off weekend for the first time in the Club’s history. Currently sitting in fourth place in the League table, there are no doubts that the Bulldogs will be looking to retain and advance on that position for the remainder of the season.

The first leg of this semi-final journey will be a trip to West Yorkshire for Tigers 2 where they’ll face Bradford Bulldogs in their barn for the second time this season; the first being a league clash where the hosts fell short in a 5-1 defeat.

On Sunday, it will then be down to Tigers take the reins and host the second leg of the semi-final. This will be the Bulldogs’ first trip down to Telford Ice Rink this season and it’ll be a tough one for Tigers having already played the first leg on away ice.

Tigers 2 Assistant Coach Dougie Wildman doesn’t deny that this will be a tough test for the Tigers.

“Bradford play very well in their own rink with a bash and crash style because of the pad being quite compact. We had a good game plan last time we were in Bradford and will be trying to do the same again this time.

To then be playing the deciding leg of the Cup semi-final on home ice in front Tigers fans will be great as getting behind the team with the noise and support goes along way for the lads.”

Tigers 2 team Captain Mike Jones is eager that the team will prove themselves when they come up against the Yorkshire side:

“The lads have been working hard all season with the aim of silverware at the end. This is our first opportunity to get ourselves into a final and we know Bradford will provide us with a tough test this evening however, we are eager to prove ourselves as a team and will be ready.

I hope you enjoy the game and look forward to hearing the noise from the stands.”
