Matty Byrne Joins Telford Tigers 2

Telford Tigers are pleased to announce the signing of Matty Byrne for the 2023/24 season. Matty will be joining the Tigers 2 line up alongside net minding teammates Ryan Lewis and Hal Griffiths.

The 17-year old makes the step up to the Laidler Tigers after working his way through the Telford junior system. Byrne has played through the junior set up, starting in the U15s roster right through to the newly formed U18s Mercians team.

Last season, Byrne put up a respectable 89% save rate in the U18s league, a stat which he will be looking to develop on further during his senior debut season with Tigers 2.

We caught up with Matty ahead of the season starting;

This will be your first season with the Tigers organisation, what made you decide to join the club?

“As I’m still playing juniors, in my last season at U18s, it’s a great opportunity for me to develop by making the transition into senior hockey.”

How have you been preparing for this new challenge during the offseason?

“Trying to keep fit and getting on the ice as much as I can ready for the new season.”

What do you hope to achieve personally in your debut season with this team?

“To improve my game, adapt and build confidence in senior hockey and try to get ice time when I can.”

How do you plan to handle the pressure and expectations that come with being a new player in the team?

“I look forward to the challenge, trying to play the best I can if I get the opportunity.”

Are there any particular games or opponents you’re looking forward to facing in your debut season?

“It’s a new league for me, new teams so I’ll be happy to play when I can.”

And finally, do you have a message for our fans ahead of the season?

“I’m excited for the season ahead and can’t wait to see you all there.”

Tigers 2 coach Scott McKenzie commented on the addition of Byrne saying;

Matty joining us at Tigers 2 is great, not only for us but also for Matty himself as a development step. He, alongside Hal Griffiths has been pushing for the number one spot during his junior days and is still pushing for it now. We now have three great net minders who will all be competing for the crease. I’m looking forward to seeing what Matty will bring to the team.
