Telford Tigers 2 are excited to announce the signing of James Mather, a 18‑year‑old defenceman, who joins the team ahead of the 2025/26 NIHL North Division 1 season.
The 17-year-old has come through the Nottingham junior system and began his senior career with the Nottingham Lions, where he impressed with his composure and offensive contribution from the blue line. Last season, Mather recorded 25 points in 32 games, underlining his ability to influence the game at both ends of the ice.
As well as joining Tigers 2, James will also have the opportunity to ice for the club’s National side, giving him valuable experience at both NIHL levels as he continues his development.
James commented on his arrival to Telford;
“I am really excited to be joining Telford. With the team moving up from Laidler to the Moralee league I believe it creates a great progression path through the club and I can’t wait to get to work with the team, the fans and the club as a whole. The club has a great reputation, and I can’t wait to try and help the team stay in winning ways and bring more silverware to Telford.”
Telford Tigers 2 coach Jason Silverthorn, commented on the signing of Mather:
“James comes to us after having a solid season at Moralee last season with Nottingham Lions and has a great opportunity with us on the two-way contract with Tommy. He is a big body who can move and has showed that he can play at both ends of the ice after putting up an impressive point total last season.
After speaking with Tommy, we’ve identified that it will be important for James to continue to play in all situations and work on the little things that make the game easy as you move up the levels. Defending hard and finding that good first pass will see him transition into the National league in no time. I look forward to working with James and helping him continue to grow as a player on and off the ice.”
