Telford Tigers are pleased to announce the signing of forward Louie Newell for the 2023/24 season. Newell, a left sided forward, will add depth to the Tigers’ forward line ahead of the season starting on 23rd September 2023.
Twenty year old Newell comes to Telford after playing the last two season for National League rivals Sheffield Steeldogs. Previously, Newell played for Nottingham Lions where he scored a creditable 48 points in 26 games during the 2021/22 season.
We spoke to Louie about his signing:
Welcome to Telford Tigers. How did your signing come about?
“I was speaking to some friends who have played for and still do play for the club and they recommended that I come here and play so I messaged Tom and asked if Telford would be interested and now I have ended up signing for Tigers.”
You made your debut in the National League in the 2021-22 season with Sheffield Steeldogs. How did you find the step up in standard?
“It was quite the step up from NIHL 1 where I had played previously (for Nottingham Lions) and of course junior hockey before that. The game is much faster at National League level and much more skilful but I feel I adapted to it well.”
Do you know any of your new teammates already?
“Yes, I knew most of the younger guys in the team from growing up playing in Coventry with Rhodes (Mitchell-King) and Zaine (McKenzie). As well as playing in Sheffield with Henry (Adams) and playing in the Midlands Conference teams with Fin (Howells), Lucas (Price) and Sam (Watkins).”
How would you describe your style of play?
“I would say I’m quite a good playmaker and like getting assists as well as trying to score some goals myself.”
What motivates you to be successful?
“My family are important to me, especially my nephews who are growing up and playing in the sport now, aspiring to play at the highest level. I hope I can be a role model for them.”
What aims / goals do you have for the forthcoming season?
“To try and contribute a lot offensively as well as giving as much as I can defensively. I want to improve my game and I think being at Telford will help me do that.”
Do you have a message for the fans?
“I hope to see lots of fans week in week out in the stands and I can’t wait to get started. I am really looking forward to the season starting and getting to play in Telford.”
Head Coach Tom Watkins commented on Louie’s signing;
“I think this is a very good pick up for us as Louie has the capability to play up and down the line up. He looked good across the weekend at our first training sessions this week and despite not skating on ice much in the last 6 months, I think there is much to him and what we saw can help our team. He’s a kid with a tremendous skill level and bags of potential. He’s only twenty but is very familiar with a number of players having grown up with them playing conference etc. so we know all about his character and he’s someone I’ve watched over a long period of time.”
Louie’s own and loan shirt is available to order now for £150. Please see the Tigers’ Online Shop for details.
In the 2023/24 season, Tigers are again offering individual player sponsorship at £500.
