Tigers Narrow Loss in Peterborough. Hexagon Telford Tigers travelled to Peterborough for the first game of the weekend off the back of a double victory against Raiders and Hull in their previous games. The list of absent players was growing with Danny Rose, Jonathan Weaver, Ricky Plant, Joe Aston, Nick Oliver and Jesse Sutton all unavailable for the game.
Tigers made the better start to the game of the two teams and were ahead in the tenth minute. A Jake Price shot from the blue line was saved by Jordan Marr but Scott McKenzie reacted first to tap the rebound into the net.
The hosts were level with five minutes of the second period remaining when Bjorkly Nordstrom skated from the left wing towards the net allowing Martins Susters to force the puck past Brad Day in the Tigers’ goal. With just thirty seconds of the period left, Peterborough took the lead. Luke Ferrara sent a pass from behind the goal to Ales Padelek who shot into the top corner of the net.
Tigers spent most of the third period chasing the game and despite throwing everything at the Phantoms goal, could not score. Peterborough caught Telford out with five minutes of the game left to play. Scott Robson sent a shot in on goal but Jarvis Hunt deflected it past Day to score and give Telford a mountain to climb.
Tigers pulled Brad Day from goal for the final minute of the game to add an extra attacker but could not reduce the deficit and fall to their second defeat of the season.
Final Score: Peterborough Phantoms 3 Hexagon Telford Tigers 1.
Scorer: Scott McKenzie.
Man of the match: Brad Day
After the game Head Coach Tom Watkins, commented, “I am disappointed not to come away with something this evening. We played at a high level for two periods. I thought we managed to take away a lot of speed with our neutral zone forecheck and were solid on the penalty kill.
I didn’t think in the second period we were hard enough on pucks, we were just chipping pucks out, relieving pressure and lost some coverage in the defensive zone which is frustrating.
We got a very solid effort out of the team and I can’t really ask much more of them at the moment as we have a lot of players out of the line up.”
