Tigers Roar to Road Victory

nottingham lions vs telford tigers 16th dec 800w

Tigers Roar to Road Victory. Hexagon Telford Tigers 1 travelled to Nottingham to play the second of back to back games against the Lions. Tigers had won the previous evening 9-1 and were able to rest Jonathan Weaver and Doug Clarkson for the game. Tom Hovell started in goal against his former team. The start to the game was delayed as a junior game had overrun meaning the players had only five minutes to warm up and then the game started straight after.

Tigers opened the scoring in the 8th minute, Jed Moreland finishing off a passing move between Scott McKenzie and Adam Taylor. Similar to the previous game, Tigers had a lot of the possession in the first period but were unable to score the goals their play deserved. Finally a second goal arrived in the 16th minute, Jason Silverthorn scoring from Warren Tait’s pass.

The second period saw Tigers score three further goals to end the game as a contest. Jack Watkins scored a power play goal in the 29th minute, which was followed less than a minute later by Silverthorn’s second goal of the night. Five minutes later Moreland scored his second goal with McKenzie and Taylor again providing the assists. Tigers dominated the period with 33 shots on the Nottingham goal.

Seven minutes into the third period Silverthorn completed his hat trick with a tidy finish from close range. The rest of the period saw no further goals as Hovell was able to gain his first shut out of the season. Tigers’ win takes them into second place in the league table one point behind leaders Sheffield who they face next Sunday at Telford Ice Rink.

Final Score: Nottingham Lions 0 Hexagon Telford Tigers 6

Scorers: Jason Silverthorn (3), Jed Moreland (2), Jack Watkins.

Man of the match: Adam Taylor.

After the game coach Tom Watkins commented, “It was a very late face off for a Sunday evening game on the road when guys have work the next day, so we had a shortened warm up and went straight into the game. The shots on goal (82) really tell the story. It was one way traffic all night with an outstanding display by the Lions goalie.”

Watkins added, “We now look forward as we prepare for some big games next weekend and over the holiday season, we expect some big crowds and I think the atmosphere will be electric so I recommend that everyone should get their tickets early as they won’t want to miss out.”
