Excitement is building in the international hockey world as Telford Tigers’ very own Tom Watkins has been appointed as the Assistant Coach for the Great Britain Under-20s team, supporting Head Coach Martin Grubb in the upcoming World Championships set to take place in Dumfries.
This collaboration between Watkins and Grubb not only brings a wealth of experience to the coaching staff but also signals a dynamic partnership that holds the promise of success for the young talents donning the Union Jack on the international stage.
Watkins is no stranger to GB hockey having spent three years as Assistant Coach of Great Britain’s men’s side and was part of the gold medal-winning team at the World Championship in Belfast in 2017.
The six-team tournament is being held at Dumfries Ice Bowl from Monday 11th to Sunday 17th December where GB will joined by Lithuania, Netherlands and Spain, along with promoted China and relegated Korea.
Tom Watkins expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the GB set-up, stating,
“I’m happy to return to the GB set up to support Martin, all the players, and the staff in any way I can. It’s been a good few years now since I’ve been involved in the program but excited for the opportunity and looking forward to the tournament.”
Watkins’ eagerness to contribute to the development of the players and the success of the team is evident, setting a positive tone for the challenges that lie ahead.
The team will report for their pre-tournament training camp in Dumfries on Tuesday 5th December and face Korea in a challenge game on Friday 8th December.
Best of luck, Martin, Tom and the GB U20s team!
